Truck Safety Advocates Ask Biden To Take Action
On January 20, 2021, Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States. The Truck Safety Coalition, a safety group representing the families of truck accident victims, hopes this change will result in urgent action on truck safety issues. The coalition’s most notable cause is to enact stronger laws and safety regulations across the industry, including mandating technology in new trucks to prevent truck accidents.
In a letter to President Biden, the Truck Safety Coalition highlighted the rise in fatal truck accidents across the nation. According to the organization and statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
Each day on average 13 people die and 400 more are injured in crashes involving large trucks.
What the Truck Safety Coalition Wants
The European Union and other countries around the world require Crash Avoidance Technologies such as AEB Automatic Emergency Breaking in Commercial Trucks and have significant numbers to support the initiative.
In addition, the Truck Safety Coalition is advocating for stronger guards to prevent underride accidents along with a device to reduce speeding in large trucks.
In the United States, speed limits vary with some states allowing large vehicles and commercial trucks to travel as fast as 85 mph, though some states have lowered the maximum speed.
Previously, the Coalition was instrumental in the fight to mandate retro-reflective taping on trucks, requiring electronic logging devices for driving time, and stop the use of dangerously large triple trailer trucks. The group calls for committed leadership and assistance from the (NHTSA) National Highway Traffic Safety Association and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and points out the fact that the U.S. Department of Transportation “has not advanced a single major safety regulation” during the past 4 years.
We can only hope the Biden administration will share the Truck Safety Coalition’s goals for road safety.
