Harley-Davidson Recalls 57,000 Touring Motorcycles Over Oil Leak Hazard

Auto Defect Auto News & Recalls BY

Haley-Davidson has issued a voluntary recall of more than 57,000 motorcycles after it was discovered that a potential oil leak could cause bikes to crash. The recall, which affects 57,138 units of the 2017 Harley-Davidson Touring bikes, stems from an improperly installed oil cooling system claim that can detach, cause oil to leak onto the rear tire, and increase the risk of crashing. Nearly 46,000 of the recalled motorcycles were sole in the U.S.

Affected Touring motorcycles under the recall include:

  • Road King, Road King Special, and Road King Classic
  • Road Glide and Road Glide Special
  • Street Glide and Street Glide Special
  • Electra Glide Ultra Classic

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), has received numerous reports of oil spills caused by the improperly installed oil line clamp, including several that resulted in crashes and injuries. Harley-Davidson officials have announced that bike owners will be notified of the voluntary recall within the week and that owners can take their motorcycles into a local dealership for a free repair. Because oil leak hazard creates significant risks of crashing, motorcyclists who own affected vehicles should avoid riding them until they can be brought in for a free repair.

The latest recall is one of the largest issued by Harley-Davidson within the past several years and follows recalls of over 30,000 bikes for clutch defects and a 2014 recall of more than 60,000 motorcycles over faulty brakes.

Unfortunately, recalls issued over defective vehicle components and auto parts come too late – either being issued after victims have already been harmed or when tens of thousands of units are already being used by consumers. Even though a recall has been issued, there are still thousands of riders who may suffer preventable harm due to the oil leak hazard. Thankfully, product liability laws and our civil justice system provide the opportunity to hold manufacturers accountable when they fail to ensure the safety of publicly available products.
