Dual-Layer Motorcycle Helmet Designed to Reduce Risk of Brain Injury

Brain Trauma Road Safety BY

Motorcycle riders should always wear a helmet but, in the past, those helmets have been known to fail to protect the brain from concussions that occur in low-speed accidents. That may change with a new dual-layer helmet designed to tackle this very problem.

Better protection from low-speed concussions

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention lists the leading causes of concussions as motor vehicle-related injuries, unintentional striking of the head against an obstacle, and playing sports. Florida brain injury lawyers know that, traditionally, motorcycle helmets have been the first line of defense to cut the risk of suffering a traumatic brain injury in an accident, but severe concussions still occurred in lower-speed accidents with the traditional helmet design. Researchers are now working on a new helmet design that uses dampeners between 2 Styrofoam layers to distribute impact. When struck, impact is dissipated evenly around the helmet, thereby reducing the risk of brain injury. In tests of the new helmet against old helmets at an impact of 4.5 mph, the old helmet gives about 79 g of force to the person’s head, but the newly designed helmet results in only about 49 g of force. The new helmet also eliminates below the neck fractures, as it is designed not to move downward and strike the collarbone, which was an issue with the old design.
