Peloton Recalls 125,000 Treadmills After Death of a Child and Dozens Injured
The trending fitness company, Peloton is recalling more than 125,000 treadmills following the death of a child and dozens of injury claims. On May 5, 2021, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of the Peloton Tread and Tread+ treadmills and urged consumers to stop using the treadmills immediately.
Peloton Models Affected
Peloton Tread Treadmill Recalled for Console Detaching
The Peloton Tread model number TR02 was recalled after reports of the touchscreen console detaching and falling causing severe injuries to consumers. The recall included over 1,050 units in the United States and over 5,400 units in Canada. According to Peloton.com, the company is offering to refund or repair the units affected.
Peloton Tread+ Treadmill Recalled Following Death of Child and Injury Claims
The CPSC issued a separate recall for the Tread+ after reports that adult users, children, pets, and objects were pulled underneath the treadmill. The Tread+, model number TR01 was designed using slat-belt technology. The belt is made up of a series of rubberized panels or slats that move on a ball-bearing system. The CPSC notes that a 6-year-old child recently died after being pulled under the rear of the treadmill. The recall included over 125,000 units in the United States. Peloton is offering consumers a full refund until November 6, 2022. After the deadline expires, consumers may be eligible for a partial refund.
Consumers who wish to keep the Tread+ are advised to relocate the treadmill to a room where children and pets cannot access it. In addition, the company recommends updating the software and enabling the lock-up option. This option requires users to enter a 4-digit passcode before every use.
