A distracted semi-tractor trailer driver changed lanes directly into the path of an SUV driven by a young mother and her four children. The impact caused one of the SUV’s tires to lose its air resulting in a rollover, and the mother sustained fatal head injuries even though she was properly seat-belted. Thankfully all four children who were seat-belted or in child car seats escaped serious injury. The “black box” event recorder from the tractor-trailer showed that the vehicle proximity system built into the tractor-trailer detected and warned of the SUV traveling next to the tractor-trailer, but the driver ignored the system warnings and changed lanes anyway.
