Chrysler Recalls Over 300,000 Dodge Ram Trucks

On October 8, 2014, Chrysler issued a recall for over 314,000 Ram 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 trucks. According to information filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (the “NHTSA”), the recall applies to Ram trucks manufactured between March 27, 2009 and September 5, 2013. The recall stems from electrical connectors in the diesel fuel heater which may overheat and increase the risk of fire.

The NHTSA’s Safety Recall Report indicates that in April 2013, two Cummins engine fuel filter assemblies leaked fuel at the fuel heater connector. Further inspection found that wiring connected to the fuel heater were deformed and overheated, which may in turn lead to failure in the fuel heater assembly. In June of 2014, certain fuel filter assemblies were returned due to terminal overheating. Further investigation revealed approximately 200 reported cases of fuel leaks at the heater connector or wiring.

As part of its recall, Chrysler plans to replace the defective wiring with silver plated beryllium copper terminal service kits. Recalled vehicles will also receive an inspection of the vehicle’s fuel heater housing to determine if leaks exist.
