Ford Recalls Two Million F-150 Trucks due to Seatbelt Fires

General BY

Last week, Ford announced a recall of approximately two million of its F-150 pickup trucks after learning that the pretensioner (a seatbelt component) can cause a fire if the vehicle is involved in a collision.

The automaker received 17 reports of fire or smoke in the U.S. and six in Canada; however, no injuries have been reported. The recall included 1.62 million vehicles in the U.S., 340,000 in Canada, and 37,000 in Mexico.

A seatbelt pretensioner is a safety featured that is deployed when a car accident occurs, tightening seatbelts—by using explosive charges—and pulling occupants into their seats. It can generate sparks upon deployment, resulting in igniting materials in the B-pillar.

The following are the affected F-150 pickup trucks:

  • 2015 through 2018 models made in the Dearborn Assembly Plant in Michigan from March 12, 2014, to August 23, 2018.
  • 2015 through 2018 models made in the Kansas City Assembly Plant in Michigan from August 20, 2014, to August 23, 2018.

Instead of replacing the pretensioner component, the company plans to remove flammable material from the B-pillars and apply heat-resistant tape to prevent sparks from causing large fires. If you have an affected Ford F-150 pickup truck, contact your local Ford dealers for free repairs.
