NHTSA Opens Investigation Into Goodyear Motor Home Tire Failures

Product Recalls Road Safety Tire Safety BY

Federal regulators from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have opened an investigation into potentially defective Goodyear motor home and RV tires that may pose risks of separation and blowout, causing serious injuries, and death. According to NHTSA, the investigation was launched after a court ordered the tire manufacturer to release data from lawsuits previously sealed under court orders and confidential settlements.

The release of data was an essential step in protecting public safety, and one that has renewed concerns over claims suggesting Goodyear motor home tire failures could be caused by a safety defect. Specifically, regulators are evaluating data, lawsuits, and settlements involving roughly 40,000 G159 tires manufactured between 1996 and 2003, as well as a number of complaints filed with NHTSA over G159 tire failures and subsequent crashes.

According to NHTSA, Goodyear was not required to report many of the claims to federal regulators, but at least 9 reported claims to the agency involved 13 injuries and one death. Some of those claims raised allegations that G159 tires were not designed for extended highway use on motor homes.

Defective Tires & Victims’ Rights
